heat and humidity again

The prediction for today is 96 degrees with the a humidex reading of 101 degrees.  The breeze saved me from the heat this morning, but I still could not work out there for very long even in the early morning.  I pulled out a few more weeds from under the deck. That was shady work, and not too bad.  We ate the last of the sugar snap peas for dinner last night, and so I removed the pea plants, putting half in the regular composter, and half in the vermicomposter.  I moved the pea/bean tower that the plants had been climbing over near the rhubarb.  Once August arrives I'll plant a new pea crop for the fall over there.  In the place where the peas had been growing, I "encouraged" some strawberry runners to move in.  I didn't spend too much time out there, but every little bit helps.

The zucchini and summer squash are now about 4 1/2 inches in length and about 3/4 " in diameter. There are three of each forming.  Won't be long!  I harvested the three carrots that remained from the first carrot planting, the only three carrots spared from the ground hog attack. Of course, I had to have a taste of carrot...very sweet!  The rest will be for dinner tonight.  Also picked six rhubarb stalks.

Last year I planted raspberry bushes.  I ate the first ripe raspberry last evening, and that was a real treat.

It is frustrating that we still have to supplement what we grow with vegetables from the grocery store.  What with the weather and the early attack by the ground hog, we are not experiencing the bounty we usually have after the fourth of July.  I am hoping that next year the Grow Camp might help us to eat our own veggies earlier and more abundantly.
